Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Music. Preference will be given to a student from Mobridge, SD first, Standing Rock Reservation Tribal members second, followed by any transfer student from Sitting Bull College. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Amanda May Memorial Scholarship



Awarded annually to a student studying Art. 




Amy and Michelle Emmert Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Development or Special Education. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA. 




Andrew Thomas Scholarship



Awarded to a new freshman pursuing a baccalaureate degree. Preference will be given to a Lead HS graduate and who has demonstrated financial need. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Annette Christensen Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a  Junior or Senior student studying Music or Theatre and who has achieved a 2.5 GPA. 




Arthur W. Nelson Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior or Senior student studying in the School of Business who has achieved a 3.00 GPA.




Barry and Sylvia Jankord Student Teaching Scholarship



Awarded annually to 12 students, divided equally between the Fall and Spring semesters. Will be awarded to Senior class students during their student teaching semester demonstrating financial need, pursuing an education degree, and who have achieved a 3.00 GPA. Preference given to students who intend to teach in grades K through 8. 




Ben & Carol Henry Instrumental Music Scholarship



Awarded to an incoming student who achieved a 2.50 GPA in high school and intends to pursue a Music major.  Preference given to a student from South Dakota, but may be from South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, or North Dakota. Selected by the head of the Music Department and the band directors. Student will be required to enroll in 15 credit hours each semester.




Bernice Thorstenson Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing an Education major. Preference will be given to a South Dakota resident from Walworth or Campbell County who has achieved a 3.00 GPA. 




Betsy A. Bouton Memorial History Education Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or senior class student pursuing a degree in History Education. Preference will be given to a student from Zion, IL.  The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA. US citizen




Betty Lloyd Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. Preference will be given to a student from Casper, WY. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Betty Richey Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. Preference will be given to a student from West River SD. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




BHSU Fallbeck and Timmons Academic Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Education. Preference will be given to a student with a 3.00 GPA or higher and who has completed a minimum of 45 credit hours. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA and to submit two essays:
The first, 1,000 words explaining the reason they are attending college, how they chose their major, and their career goals.
The second, 500 words explaining the difficulties a non-traditional student faces when returning to college. My plan for overcoming those difficulties and how this scholarship will help me implement my plan.




BHSU Family Scholarship



  1. The BHSU employee applicant must be a full time employee and at least a half-time student (minimum 6 credit hours) at BHSU.
 
  1. If a child of a BHSU employee, the applicant must be a full time BHSU student (minimum 12 credit hours) at the time of the application.
 
  1. All applicants must be in good academic standing; if not, they may reapply with a 2.0 GPA or better (passing grades in 67% of classes).
 
  1. The successful applicant will be selected on the basis of greatest need.
 
  1. Scholarship funds are divided equally by semester.

Awarded to a Junior or Senior student pursuing a program in Education. Preference will be given to a Spearfish High School graduate. If a Spearfish graduate is not available the recipient must be from western South Dakota.




Bill & Stirling Sage Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a program in Art who has achieved a 2.50 GPA.




Bill and LeeAnn Collins Scholarship



Awarded to a Freshman or Sophomore student pursuing a program in Tourism & Hospitality who has achieved a 2.50 GPA. Preference given to a resident of South Dakota. 




Bill Bogard English Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior or Senior pursuing a degree in English. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.50 GPA.




Billy J. Sexton III Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a program in Photography. Preference given to students from Spearfish, SD. Recipient required to complete 30 credit hours each academic year.




Black Hills Bronco Booster Club



Awarded to a full time student pursuing any major and participating on the Rodeo Team.




Black Hills Energy (Business) Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in business or communications. Priority will be given to students who are customers or children of customers served by Black Hills Energy in South Dakota, Wyoming, Kansas, Iowa, Colorado, Nebraska, Montana or Arkansas. Candidates must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00. One half of the scholarship will be awarded in the fall and the remainder in the spring.

Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in business or communications. Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in business or communications. Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in business or communications. Priority will be given to students who are customers or children of customers served by Black Hills Energy in South Dakota, Wyoming, Kansas, Iowa, Colorado, Nebraska, Montana or Arkansas. Black Hills Pioneer Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or Senior student pursuing a degree in Communication. Student must maintain a 3.50 GPA. Preference given to a student who is interested in a career in reporting or writing.




Black Hills State CPA Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Accounting. Preference given to a student intending to follow a career as a Certified Public Accountant. Recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.

Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior student pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. Recipient must maintain a 2.50 GPA. 




Boston Petro-Rosalie Aslesen Violin Scholarship



Awarded to a student who is an exceptional violinist with at least six years of prior lessons.  Recipient will be required to maintain a 3.50 GPA.




Brian and Sharon McKay Scholarship



Awarded to a student from any major. Preference given to a student who grew up on a ranch. Recipient will be required to maintain a 2.50 GPA.




Brittany Thompson Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Political Science. Preference to students from Spearfish, the or the Black Hills. Recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Bruce Page Hultgren Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Instrumental Music. Recipient will be required to maintain a  3.30 GPA.




Bryce & Clara Christensen -- Freshman Scholarship



Awarded to a Freshman student. Preference given to a graduate from Spearfish, Belle Fourche, Sturgis, or Lead-Deadwood High Schools. Recipient must maintain full time (12cr.) enrollment and achieve a 2.00 GPA.

Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Business. Recipient will be required to maintain a 2.50 GPA.

Awarded to a South Dakota resident Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in the Math or Sciences. Recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA. 




CASE Freshman Scholarship



Awarded to a Freshman class student pursuing a History degree. Preference given to students from Western SD, Carter County Montana, Crook or Weston County, WY. Recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA. 




Catherine Schmaltz Jacobsen Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore class student pursuing a degree in Nursing. Preference given to a student who graduated from a high school located in the Northern Black Hills. Student will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Charles V. Sederstrom Scholarship



Awarded to two Freshman students, one from Deadwood and one from Lead, SD. Preference given to students with identified financial need. Recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Charlotte Boner Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. Preference given to a resident of WY. Recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA and complete 30 credits each year. 




Charlotte Forsberg Memorial Communications Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior class student pursuing a degree in communication. Recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Charlotte Forsberg Memorial English Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior class student pursuing a degree in English. Recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Charlotte Forsberg Memorial Theatre Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior class student pursuing a degree in theatre. Recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Charlotte Mayree Roebuck O'Neill Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Education. Recipient will be required to maintain a 2.50 GPA.




CinKelVic Uttke Family Scholarship



$1,000 a year for a student from Baker High School. If no Baker students are available, any Black Hills State University students is eligible (the same person could receive the award as a graduating senior and their second through fourth year of college if he or she is deemed the most eligible).

Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior class student. Preference given to students from Spearfish, Belle Fourche, Rapid City, or Buffalo SD. Recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Crazy Horse Scholarship



Awarded to an American Indian student. Recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




CSA Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior Non-traditional student,  24 years-old or older. Recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Dale Brownell Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior student who is a resident and actively participating in a community or student organization. Preference will be given to Spearfish High School graduates. If a SHS graduate is not available, the recipient must be from western SD. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Dale Sander Memorial Scholarship Fund



Awarded to a resident Sophomore, Junior, or Senior student who is pursuing a degree in Business. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Darleen Young Business Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a major in Business. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Darleen Young Piano Scholarship



Awarded to a full time student with interest in the piano. Recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Darrell and Joan Bowman Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Science or Science Education. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Dave Diamond Media Award



Awarded to a Junior class student pursuing a degree in Communication. Preference given to a student participating in BHSU media including radio, TV, newspaper, podcasting, broadcasting, and photography. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




David and Carla Hillard Business Scholarship



Awarded to a student with demonstrated financial need, pursuing a degree in Business Management. Preference will be given to a student whose studies emphasize Entrepreneurship, Finance, or Economics. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.50 GPA.




David B. Miller Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a non-traditional Sophomore, Junior, or Senior student pursuing a degree in History. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Delger-Krier Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Mathematics or Science Education who graduated from McCook Central High School in Salem, SD. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Derral R. Herbst Scholarship



The recipient must be studying chemistry, zoology, and/or botany with a GPA 2.7 or higher. The recipient must enroll in a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester offered by BHSU. One half of the scholarship will be awarded in the fall and the other half in the spring. 




Don and Darlene Swartz Education Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or Senior pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Development or Special Education. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.7 GPA. Preference will be to a Native American student. 




Don Manning Scholarship - SD Hotel & Lodging Association



Awarded to a sophomore class student pursuing a degree in Tourism & Hospitality Management. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.50 GPA. South Dakota Resident.




Don Weiland Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a student from western South Dakota, preferably Rapid City. Student will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Donald Young Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior class student pursuing a degree in History, Human Services, Political Science, Social Science or Sociology. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.. 




Dorcile Fowler Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a new student pursuing a degree in Elementary or Special Education. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA. Student must be a United State citizen and a South Dakota resident. ACT 22 or above. Handicapped students or students with financial need will be given priority, 




Dorothy Ankrum Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. Preference will be given to a student who was involved in 4H from a farming or ranching  background. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.75 GPA.




Dorothy Beck Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. Preference will be given to a student from SD, NE, WY, MT, or ND. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Dorothy Liebe Branch Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Music with a piano emphasis. Preference given to a student from Lead, Deadwood, Spearfish or western SD. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.50 GPA and enroll in 15 credits each semester.

Awarded to a new student pursuing a degree in English or Theatre. Student will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA and enroll in 12 credit hours each semester. 
 




Dr. Greg Cooch Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Elementary or Special Education. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Dr. Jim Morris Scholarship



Awarded to a new student with demonstrated financial need pursuing a degree at BHSU. Preference given to a student with between a 2.00 to 3.00 GPA. The recipient will be required to enroll only in courses at BHSU and to maintain a 2.50 GPA.




Dr. Malvin Skarsten Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Elementary education or Secondary History Teaching. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Dr. Max Durgin Math Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Mathematics. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Dr. Richard G. Kessel Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Photography. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Dr. Rick Boyd - KBHU-FM Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore class student pursuing a degree in Communication. Preference will be given to a student with an interest in broadcasting. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Dr. Thomas Timmons Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior class student pursuing a degree in English Teaching. Student will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA and to enroll in a minimum of 15 credit hours each semester. 




Dr. Tom Hills Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Political Science. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Dwayne LaFave Northern Hills Community Band and/or Belle Fourche Cowboy Band Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Music or Music Education who is a participant in the Belle Fourche Cowboy Band and/or the Northern Hills Community Band. Preference will be given a to student who participates in both bands. Students who participate in other local community bands may be considered if there is no other candidate that meets the criteria. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.

Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Education. Preference given to a student from western South Dakota. The recipient will  be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




E.C. Mikkelsen Business Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Business. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA. The student must be from Western South Dakota.




E.C. Mikkelsen Mathematics Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Mathematics. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Eaton-Shipley Family Education Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Education. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.60 GPA.




Ed and Mary Furois Family Scholarship



Awarded to a new student with documented educational challenges (Example: a student with an IEP as a junior or senior high school student). The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Edith Gutsche Anderson Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a new student pursuing a degree in Education. Preference given to a student from Butte or Mead Counties. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA and to enroll in a minimum 15 credit hours each semester. Varsity athletes are not eligible for this award. 




Edward L. Houghton Business Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a major in Business. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Elias Family Psychology Scholarship



Declared Psychology major. Student must have completed 48 credit hours at Black Hills State University. Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Graduate of a South Dakota High School.




Elizabeth Fritz Ruff Scholarship



Awarded to a non-traditional student pursuing a degree in Education. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Emma Dippert-Dorothea Blyler Scholarship for Students of Music



Awarded to a student pursuing a major in Music. The recipient will be required to maintain a minimum 2.00 GPA.




Energy Laboratories



Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Physical Science, or Physical Science. Preference will be given to a resident of SD or WY. The recipient will be required to maintain a minimum 2.50 GPA.




Erma Fiedler Mikkelsen Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. Preference given to a student who displays characteristics of compassion  and a sincere desire to help and encourage every child to reach their greatest potential. The recipient will be required to maintain a minimum 2.50 GPA.




Erwin & Joan Reimann Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Music. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Esther Kruse Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior class student pursuing a degree in English. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Evelyn O'Neill Looney Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior student pursuing a degree in Business. The recipient will be required to maintain a minimum 3.00 GPA and to enroll in a minimum 15 credit hours each semester. 




Evertt and Joann Follette Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore class student pursuing a degree in Science Teaching. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Fassbender-Furois Photography Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a major in Photography. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Fayette & Wenona Cook Scholarship



Awarded to a Senior class student pursuing a degree in the Social Sciences. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA. Two awards will be given each year, one to a female and one to a male student. 




First Interstate Bank Scholarship



Awarded to a student from western SD pursuing a degree in Business. The recipient must maintain a 3.00 GPA and will be required to enroll in 15 credit hours each semester. 




Flora Menzel Lee Memorial Music Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Music or Music Teaching. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.20 GPA. 




Frances M. Ryther and John Swanson Single Parent Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Education. Preference will be given to a student who is a single parent from WY. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA. Not available to Physical Education majors. 




Francis Farrington Farnham Family Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing any baccalaureate major. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need from SD, ND, WY, NE, or MT. Recipient will be required to maintain a 2.75 GPA.




Francis L. Waugh Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Communication or Photography. Preference will be given to someone planning a career in the Wildlife Management field, specifically, the SD Fame and Fish Department or CO Fish and Parks Department. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Frank L. & Nancy L. Mattern Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Accounting. Preference will be given to a student from Spearfish High School. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Freeda Summers Schroeder Education Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior class student with demonstrated financial need pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. Preference given to a SD resident. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA and to enroll in 14 credit hours each semester. 




Freeda Summers Schroeder English Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior class student with demonstrated financial need pursuing a degree in English. Preference will be given to a SD resident. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA and to enroll in a minimum 14 credit hours each semester. 




Freedom Scholarship



The Freedom Scholarship is a public/private partnership scholarship made available through generous private donations and the State of South Dakota to assist South Dakota students with financial need. Eligible students must:
  • Maintain South Dakota Residency
  • Demonstrate financial need as determined by the awarding institution
  • Meet a minimum 2.00 GPA requirement
  • Be pursuing a baccalaureate degree
  • Graduate in five years or less
  • Commit in writing to live and work in South Dakota for three years post graduation. 
  • Acknowledge failure to meet any of these requirements will result in the conversion from scholarship to interest-bearing loan
Black Hills State University will offer this award annually to students as a part of their financial aid package with no additional application required. 




Friends of Music



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Music. Preference will be given to student actively involved in one or more of the following groups: Concert Choir, Concert Band, Black Hills Singers, Black Hills Gold, Jazz Band, Dakota Chamber Orchestra, or Pep Band. Auditions are held February. New freshman applicants must preform live auditions or send in audition tape to the music Department, and must be in the top 40% of their graduating class. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.50 GPA.




Friends of Theatre Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Theatre. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Full Circle Scholarship



Awarded to a student who is an enrolled member of an American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander American, or other indigenous group native to territories of the United States pursuing studies in Pre-Health or Pre-Medicine. Priority will be given to a resident of SD. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Gary Moser Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Business. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.75 GPA.




George Edward Martin Scholarship



Awarded to a Senior class student pursuing a degree in Business or Entrepreneurial Studies. Preference will be given to a SD resident. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




George Rinker Research Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing studies in DNA research. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Gladys Holst McFarland Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Education. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated leadership ability. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Goodman Scholarship for Critical Political Thought



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Political Science or History. Preference will be given to a graduate of a SD High School. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.5 GPA and to submit a short essay of 100 words or less writing to the following prompt:

In your opinion, what is the role and responsibility of government in a free society? Support your answer.

Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Visual Art. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.

Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Education. Preference will be given to a student pursuing a degree in Special Education or Elementary Education. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.70 GPA.

Hattie Mae Rose Saubers Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore, Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA.




Hazel Karterud Fuerstenau Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Mathematics Teaching or Science Teaching. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.

Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Education. Preference will be given to a student from western SD. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.75 GPA. Minimum $1,000 each.

Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.70 GPA and to enroll in a minimum of 15 credit hours each semester.

50% of of the annual allocation will be awarded to four undergraduate students. 
10% of the allocation will be awarded to a MBA student who is a graduate of the BHSU School of Business.

Awarded to a student pursuing a BHSU baccalaureate degree. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Jace DeCory Memorial Scholarship



The purpose of this fund is to provide educational opportunities for Native American students to study accurate history, culture and language of native people of North America and South Dakota. Student recipients(s) must be majoring in American Indian Studies and maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher. The recipient(s) must also enroll in a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester offered by BHSU.




Jacket Investment Club Scholarship



Annual scholarship awarded to an Economics or Finance major interested in pursuing Finance as a career choice. Recipients must be an active member of the Jacket Investments Club with a GPA of 3.2 or higher and be a junior or senior in the forthcoming semester. Scholarship only to be used for on-campus BHSU courses.

Awarded to a student pursuing a baccalaureate degree. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




James and Ivanka Dzierwa Family Scholarship Endowment



Awarded to a student pursuing a baccalaureate degree. Preference will be given to a student possessing a confirmed career interest in international development or be in pursuit of an International Studies minor, or pursuing a career in TOEFL (Teaching of English as a Second Language). The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.25 GPA.




James Memory Martin Scholarship



Awarded to a Senior class student pursuing a degree in Science Education. Preference will be given to a SD native. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Jastorff Family Scholarship



Awarded to a Freshman or Sophomore class student pursuing a declared major in music or a theatre participant. The award alternates between a music (odd years) and theatre (even years) student every-other-year. Priority will be given to a student from Spearfish or Sturgis. Preference will be given to a South Dakota student if there are no students from Spearfish or Sturgis.

The recipient will be required to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of:  3.0 after the first two semesters 3.2 after the third and fourth semesters 3.4 after the fifth, sixth, and seventh semesters and successfully complete 30 credit hours of coursework during each academic year. Three letters of recommendation and a personal statement from the applicant describing their career interests and how the Nelson scholarship will help them toward that goal are required.

The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA and must be enrolled in courses only at the Spearfish campus.

Awarded to a student pursuing a baccalaureate degree. Half of the award is reserved for the active president of the College Democrat Organization. The remainder to a student enrolled as a Democratic Legislative intern representing BHSU. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.

Moravec/Stott Outdoor Advertising Needs Based Scholarship



The recipients will be determined by the BHSU Special Scholarships Committee. Preference will be given to those students who do not qualify for a Pell Grant (or other large federal grant program) but have a Student Aid Index no greater than or 1.5 times the annual Pell Grant allocation at the time of scholarship awarding. Preference will also be given to students demonstrating summer employment with family farms, ranches, and businesses. Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher. The recipient must also enroll in a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester offered by BHSU. One half of the scholarship will be awarded in the fall and the other half in the spring.

Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a degree in Elementary or Special Education. Preference will be given to a student from Sturgis or Whitewood. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA and provide a one page biographical sketch outlining his professional goals, including a photo. 




Music Performance Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Music Teaching - Instrumental or vocal. Preference will be given to a student who is in the top 40% of their graduating class, recommended by their HS music teacher, and actively involved in one or more of the following groups: Concert Choir, Concert Band, Black Hills Singers, Black Hills Gold, Jazz Band, Dakota Chamber Orchestra, Pep Band. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.

Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Biology with a Forestry specialization. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA and to complete 30 credit hours each academic year.

Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Accounting. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.50 GPA.

Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Business. Preference will be given to a student from western SD. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.00 GPA and must complete at least 15 credit hours each semester. 




Northern Hills Community Band Scholarship



Awarded to a student pursuing a baccalaureate degree. Preference will be given to a student who performs on traditional band instruments and plays in the BHSU Band and Northern Hills Community Band. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.




Northern Hills Disabled American Vets Scholarship



Awarded to a Junior or Senior class student pursuing a baccalaureate degree. Preference will be given to disabled veterans first, veterans second, or the spouse or child of veterans third. The recipient must maintain a 3.00 GPA and successfully complete a minimum of 30 credit hours each academic year. The recipient will further be required to provide proof of an honorable discharge (DD214) and attend a DAV Chapter 11 meeting once late each semester (November and April) to give an oral presentation on their course of study and how the scholarship has helped them.

Preference will be given to a Spearfish HS graduate who graduated within the top third of their class, participated in extracurricular activities, and has demonstrated financial need. TJ Jackson Memorial Scholarship



Awarded to a Sophomore or Junior class student pursuing a degree in Photography. Students must demonstrate light painting photography in their portfolio including, nature scenes, action shots, such as climbing/skateboarding, camping or related.  Recipient(s) must show creativity, uniqueness, boldness with focus and attention on a Be Free Spirit. If there is a collaboration art show between Matthew's Opera House and BHSU, recipient photo will be included in the show. The recipient will be required to maintain a 2.00 GPA.

A special committee made up of the Dean of Students, a skateboarder, a climber/hiker and a photography faculty member, who will be an ex-officio member. Two finalists will be selected and go through a short interview which would include Chandi Jackson, if she so desires. Selection will be made with Chandi Jackson, as long as she chooses to be involved in the process.

Each recipient of this scholarship will be strongly urged to "replace" the amount drawn against it, when they become gainfully employed and have their "feet on the ground, thus keeping the endowment growing for future Veterans.
